Chasing Fireflies, Beautiful Summertime

My friend Jackie came to visit for the weekend and we had a great time. Saturday was a leisurely day spent chasing and watching fireflies. Now, while watching the yard from the deck, we noticed a certain pattern. It seemed every time the fireflies lit up they were flying upward. We've yet to solve the mystery. Any idea why they do this?
