Butterfly Macro

I like to chase butterflies with my camera. It makes me happy! It's time to slow down and take a closer look at our world. A much, much, closer look.

If you see me in my backyard sitting in the grass or standing over a bush with my camera -- you may think I'm a little strange! But really, I'm simply observing the world that goes on right under our feet. It really is quite amazing to behold, and yet, so frequently overlooked.

For those of you interested, these, and all of my other macro images are taken with my Canon 100mm f/2.8 Macro USM lens. It is such an amazing lens and opens many new doors in photography! It allows you to get close up images, with great detail, from enough of a distance that you don't always scare away your subjects. PLUS the f/2.8 creates such a beautiful, creamy, bookeh!

Nature's Beauty

This week I watched a documentary called Home by director Yann Arthus-Bertrand. The cinematography was incredibly beautiful, but the message did not paint a pretty picture. The movie is similar to An Inconvenient Truth in it's message, but with better imagery. It's difficult to comprehend the changes that scientists are predicting but I'd rather be aware of these possibilities than in the dark.

I consider myself very aware of my acts as a human and the impact I have on our earth, yet this movie upset me to no end. I watched Home on Sunday and every day since I have thought about the movie, multiple times a day.

I won't go into the details, or lecture about taking care of our planet, but I will recommend you rent and watch this movie. Maybe it will have an impact on you too. After all, what can it hurt? Knowledge is power.

So, in light of admiring our beautiful earth, here's one of earth's beautiful creatures. I had fun chasing this guy around the back yard :)

Happy 80th Birthday Grandma!

This Saturday my Grandma J celebrated her 80th Birthday! We had a delicious dinner at the Chart House in Annapolis then came home for cake/ice cream/laughs :) Such a wonderful time with family.

Excited for the cake!

The restaurant had a little surprise :)

Summer Harvest

Instead of buying the typical shirt or gift card from the Gap I decided to be creative for Mother's day. I gave the gift of manual labor and dug out a large spot in the yard for a new garden... my Mom was very pleased with her gift :)

We have been working hard to keep the plants happy through the spring. Now that we're into August we're able to enjoy the payoff -- fresh veggies!

There is nothing I love more in the summer than a fresh, ripe, still-warm-from-the-sun tomato and by next week we'll have them coming out of our ears! I, of course, will be in heaven. I can sit in the yard and eat a tomato, fresh picked, just like an apple. Nothing like it...

It's still early, and this is just the beginning, but I am quite excited for this summer's veggie garden. Here's a look at what's come off the vine so far: tomatoes, HUGE zucchini and cucumbers, and our first green pepper!

The result of some of the ingredients: fresh cucumber, tomato, and dill salad.

The dill came from our herb garden which is doing pretty good this year. I lost my cilantro plant for the second year in a row! Figures my favorite herb is the one herb I can't keep alive!
